About this coffee
A full-bodied coffee, this blend is roasted longer to transform the Ethiopian & Peruvian Arabicas of our Light Roast. Instead of bright citrus & biscuity cereal we have notes of sweet molasses and ripe, red fruits – all brought together by the Indonesian Sumatra which powers though the cup to deliver a dark, earthy chocolate body, garnished with herbal nuances and a spicy finish. Indonesian bean has a concentration and richness that lingers on the palate, giving this coffee the ability to hold its own when paired with milk. Because of this we recommend Dark Roast be best enjoyed as a Flat White, Latte or Cappuccino – where the strong, powerful flavours of the cup can come into their own.
The Sumatran Mandehling
Grown on the lofty slopes of Mount Leuser near the port of Padang, Sumatran Mandheling coffee is a rare high altitude bean grown at upwards of 5,000ft. Originally brought across by Dutch colonialists in the 19th Century, Indonesian coffee has had a difficult journey back to the world’s stage – but the KSU Arinagata (a coffee-producing cooperative founded in 2006) is seeking to rebuild and restock plantations have been ravaged by decades of war and civil strife. As a result of the the recent increase in demand for coffee from the Gayo Mountains, Indonesian coffee has once again started to carve out it’s share of the world’s coffee market; and the success of KSU Arinagata has meant funds can now be invested into pressing community needs, such as the construction of public toilets and washing areas and shelters against rain.
