Whether you're still attempting to wash off the glitter from Nottinghill Carnival or perhaps waking up from another 'crazy' night out on the town, it's quite likely that you are experiencing what many of us like to refer to as 'the morning after the night before.' We're sure it comes as no surprise to hear that a good cup of coffee is often a popular cure for this sorry state of being, but did you know that there may be more health benefits to your coffee craving than just curing that throbbing hangover?
A study conducted for over a decade by Finnish scientist included 19,000 people who were all questioned on their medical history, alcohol intake and coffee consumption. They found evidence that a steady stream of the good stuff throughout the day can offset the harmful effects of alcohol on your body. Their research found that 5 or more cups of coffee a day can reduce levels of an enzyme known as GGT, a precursor to liver damage, heart disease and diabetes.
Now, of course, it's highly advised to avoid the situation of having too much alcohol to begin with but this research is still something worth bearing in mind; not that we ever needed an excuse to drink more cups of coffee. Next time a colleague questions your caffeine intake, you can simply tell them it's for the good of your health.
